Believing that the logical next step for Governor Richardson’s successful film production initiative is to cultivate a new generation of New Mexico filmmakers, Moving Image Arts Chair, Jonathan Wacks solicited the governor’s support for the creation of a professional, graduate level ‘above-the-line’ filmmaking program at the College of Santa Fe. The result is the New Mexico Filmmakers Intensive which was launched in January 2007.
The NMFI offers an immersion in the three key creative areas of filmmaking: screenwriting, directing and producing. Each of the tracks offers intensive hands-on experience with a comprehensive curriculum that fosters the development of an artist’s unique vision and the means to deliver it.
In addition to attending classes tailored to your own area of interest, you will have the opportunity to participate in a series of interdisciplinary hands-on workshops led by guest lecturers who are working at the top of their fields in today’s motion picture and television industries. The summer semester invites NMFI directors and producers to shoot an original film on either Super 16mm film or High Definition video, with a budget of up to $10,000 provided for each approved project. As a screenwriter you will be mentored through the writing of a feature length screenplay, creating a personal ‘calling card’ to launch your professional career.
Housed in the Garson Communications Center, which includes the nationally recognized Moving Image Arts Department and Garson Studios, NMFI’s summer productions will have a 5,000 sq foot soundstage dedicated for student use. The College of Santa Fe’s recent implementation of a half million technology upgrade added state-of-the-art High Definition (HD) digital work flow to its professional level film capabilities from image capture through exhibition.

Enrollment
To ensure a quality experiential learning environment, enrollment in the New Mexico Filmmakers Intensive is limited to seven students in each of the Directing and Producing tracks, and 12 students in Screenwriting.
An undergraduate degree, in any field, or evidence of significant film industry experience, is required for admission. Applicants meeting New Mexico residency requirements will be given priority consideration and are eligible for merit and need-based tuition grants, ranging between $2,000 and full scholarship.
